How to Lose Tummy Fat
There is ONE exercise that can best help you with getting a flatter stomach.
It’s called — are you ready for this? — cleaning up your nutrition. I know, I know. That’s not what you wanted to hear, was it?
But the truth is, it doesn’t matter how many ab exercises you do. You could be crunching and crunching and crunching til the cows come home and STILL not see any real results from all that work, IF your diet is not in line with your goals.
When you have a layer of tummy fat covering your abdominal muscles, you cannot see any of your hard work or ab definition coming to fruition.
Women with abs have those abs specifically because of the fat burning foods they’re eating. Have you ever heard the saying, “Get fit in the gym, lose weight in the kitchen?”
In general, though ab exercises for women can help strengthen the underlying muscle, specific “tummy toning exercises” don’t actually do much as far as helping you see your abs poke out or in get you the flatter stomach you want.
TRAINER TIP:
You cannot “spot reduce” fat in selective places on your body. Instead, you have to lower your overall body fat percentage through proper exercise and eating. There is just no other way.

Best Abs Workout for Women
Okay, so now that that part is out of the way… Let’s go over our current favorite ab moves!
Even though you can’t spot reduce fat on your body, you CAN still strengthen your core and abdominal muscles. Doing so is extremely beneficial, as your abs help protect your lower back and torso from strain, injury and pain.
Our current favorite ab exercise is actually not a common “ab exercise” at all.
It’s the squat!
Doing heavy squats is one of the BEST ab developers there is. Yes, you’re using a ton of lower body (especially glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps) muscles during your squats. But the squat is one of the ultimate core strengtheners too.
The load you’re bearing in a back squat (with the barbell stationed across the top back of your shoulders/upper back) travels all the way through the entire posterior chain (essentially working every single muscle in your body, especially down the spine.
Your abdominal muscles not only act as stabilizers to your torso, they also help hold your body upright and major force is being transferred through your core during a squat.
If you were to just do some heavy squats and eat real nutrition (following the guidelines in the LEARN Meal Guide) — we can almost guarantee that within a matter of weeks, you’d definitely start to see (and FEEL) your abs.
Of course, we also love situps, anything with a stability ball, plank work and lots of other exercises to help develop the abs. But in general, if we’re looking for a one-stop-shop of ab work — it’s gotta be the squat.
Hopefully this helps you in some way! Leave a comment below to share YOUR favorite ab exercises or to request other problem areas you’d like to work in next week’s Workout Wednesday video.
